The plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.

If you are looking for a low-growing combination for a shady border or woodland walk, then look no further. The pulmonaria kicks off the show with its vivid blue flowers in spring. This happens while the fern is gradually unfurling its fronds, and when fully open, it is this that takes centre stage with its beautifully patterned foliage.

In this collection you will receive three of each of the following plants. They are all supplied in a 9cm nursery pot.

  • Pulmonaria 'Trevi Fountain': Said to be one of the longest-blooming blue lungworts, this ground-covering plant is well worth growing for the colour of the flowers alone. They are a striking cobalt blue, and they look very fresh and bright in spring, perched in clusters on top of the upright stems above the silver-freckled foliage. Grows to 30cm.

  • Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Ursula's Red': The newly emerging fronds of this beautiful fern have rich purple-bronze tones, which look like they have been sprinkled with silver dust. This two-tone effect creates a striking foliage contrast for mixed borders or woodland gardens. The purple colour becomes less pronounced as the fronds mature and they become greener with a silver dusting. It also works well when used as low planting in a large pot and placed on a shady terrace. It is easy to grow in reliably moist soil where it will slowly form low-growing clumps. Grows to 40cm.

  • Planting tips:
Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. For best results it is essential that the plants are kept well watered for the first year, particularly during warmer weather.
