1.

Harvest garlic, onions and shallots once the stems start to go yellow. Let the bulbs dry in the sun before storing.

2.

Sow Oriental greens such as mizuna and mibuna, and also pak choi. They will be less prone to bolting from now on.

3.

Look out for the larvae of large rose sawfly: they can defoliate roses. Pick off, or spray with Py Spray Garden Insect Killer (pyrethrum), Bayer Sprayday Greenfly Killer (deltamethrin) or Westland Resolva Bug Killer (lambda cyhalothrin).

4.

Plant out autumn-flowering bulbs such as Colchicum, Crocus specious, C. sativus and Sternbergia.

5.

Harvest early-maturing apples such as ‘Discovery’ and ‘James Grieve’. Use soon after picking – they do not store well.

6.

Order spring-flowering bulbs for borders and containers.

Lawn

  • Mom summer-flowering meadows at the end of the month. Leave hay for a few days to allow seeds to drop then remove
  • Do not use lawn weedkillers if the weather is hot and dry: weeds need to be in active growth

Glasshouse & indoor

Pond

  • Thin out oxygenating plants. Leave on the side of the pond to allow wildlife to crawl back
  • Where possible cover the pond with netting to prevent leaves falling in and rotting in water
  • Continue removing blanket weed and duckweed

Kitchen garden

  • Start lifting maincrop potatoes
  • Summer prune trained fruit trees such as fans, espaliers, stepovers and cordons
  • On ‘rod and spur’-trained grapevines, trim non-flowering side branches to five leaves and subsequent growth to one leaf. Shorten fruit-bearing branches to two leaves beyond their fruit bunch.
  • Yellow, red-purple or browning between tomato leaf veins is usually
  • magnesium deficiency. Keep moist, avoid overfeeding with fertiliser and spray leaves with Epsom salts
  • Leave marrows, pumpkins and winter squashes to ripen on the plant, but harvest before weather turns frosty. Ideally place the fruit on wooden board or a tile to prevent soiling and rotting

Ornamental garden

Pest and disease watch

  • Remove fruit affected with brown rot to reduce spread of the infection
  • Keep leeks protected with enviromesh or fleece against leaf mining fly and leek moth.
  • Gather and dispose of fallen rose leaves affected by black spot.
