This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, freely draining soil
  • Rate of growth: fast-growing
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This pretty perennial produces loose clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers from midsummer to autumn, topping the upright stems that rise above its narrow, cream-striped leaves. 'Silver Lace' is often commonly referred to as 'society garlic', as like all Tulbaghias it is closely related to onions and garlic - and therefore its foliage is aromatic. Don't let that put you off though, as it looks really lovely towards the front of a sunny border - and when planted beneath roses, it can even help repel pests!

  • Garden care: Split and divide large clumps in spring. Keep almost dry when plants are dormant, but water freely when actively growing. In colder regions, grow them in pots so they can be overwintered in a sheltered spot.
