Sanguisorba 'Proud Mary'
burnett
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: Poor-to-average, moist, well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: June to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Erect stems bear densely packed, dark red flowerheads with red pink stamens in midsummer. They seem to hover in large numbers above the decorative mounds of attractive, fern-like foliage. 'Proud Mary' is great for adding vertical interest and movement to a mixed herbaceous bed, or mixing with ornamental grasses for a naturalised effect. - Garden care: Cut back the foliage when it dies back and is no longer attractive in autumn or winter. Once established, divide overly large clumps in spring.
