This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Average
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

A large shrub or small tree that is highly valued for its ornamental features. While the trunk and older branches grow upright, forming an oval rounded crown, the younger branches gracefully droop downwards and twist and curl. In the spring, yellow catkins emerge among the glossy green, lance-shaped leaves that also curl and twist, creating lovely gold and green tresses. During autumn, the foliage turns a brilliant golden-yellow, showcasing the plant's sculptural silhouette during the winter months.

  • Garden care:
Prefers a reliably moist spot in full sun. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter and shorten any over-long shoots. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted compost in the planting hole. Can be cut back hard (after establishing for a few years) each winter to encourage the formation of new, brightly coloured shoots, and to control height and spread.
