This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: tolerates most freely draining soils
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The aromatic grey-green leaves of this oregano are edible, but as it's so showy, it's most often grown as an ornamental plant. That's because it produces wonderful hop-like flowerheads that seem to drip from the ends of the stems throughout summer, turning from fresh green to rich pink as the season progresses. It looks great when used as edging, or when potted up and allowed to cascade over the side.

  • Garden care: Cut back old flowered stems in spring.
