This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: Full sun
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Average
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

Brace yourself for a stunning display of large, deep red flowers from mid summer to early autumn with this gorgeous blanket flower. It is the essential, low maintenance summer flower and it will thrive in those hot, dry spots in the garden where many other plants will falter. Bees and butterflies tend to love it and it is perfect for a planting scheme based on hot colours. The brassy blooms will also make excellent and long-lasting cut flowers.

  • Garden care:
Keep picking and/or deadheading throughout the summer for strong flowering performance and cut all stems back after flowering. Gaillardia thrives in nutrient-poor soil, so resist the temptation to mulch or fertilise. Seedheads are superb winter food source for birds, once established 'Burgunder' is drought tolerant.

  • Sowing instructions:
Sow indoors from February to April, 5mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost. Keep in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag between 15-20 °C and keep moist for 2-4 weeks until germination. Transplant seedlings once large enough to handle into 9cm pots to grow on. Acclimatise and plant out once the risk of frost has passed.
