This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but freely draining soil
  • Rate of growth: Average
  • Flowering period: May
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

A striking, small ornamental tree valued for its purple-red fruit and deeply cut, blue-grey foliage. This round-headed deciduous tree bears clusters of creamy white spring flowers followed by abundant dark purple fruit in early autumn. The deeply divided leaves emerge silvery blue-green before maturing to greyish green, and when planted in full sun, this hardy tree develops the best autumn colour and fruit display. Tolerant of various soils, pollution, and coastal conditions, Crataegus schraderiana makes an excellent specimen tree for smaller gardens wanting multi-season interest.

  • Garden care:
Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly.
