This tree is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Average
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

A popular, spreading, thorny tree with mid-green, three- to five-lobed leaves and a profusion of large, lightly scented, bright red flowers with creamy centres in late spring, popular with bees and butterflies. It is an ideal plant for a range of soil conditions (including chalk), and it is tough enough to cope with exposed sites once established, as well as city pollution and coastal conditions. ‘Crimson Cloud’ produces tiny red berries in autumn, great for attracting birds.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in late autumn or winter. When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly
    • CAUTION toxic if eaten/skin & eye irritant
