This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to May, often again in June and July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A vigorous climber with masses of indigo-blue bell-shaped flowers with pale, lime-green to yellow centres, which appear from spring. An early Clematis, ‘Bredon Blue’ is followed in summer by intriguing, fluffy seed heads. Low maintenance, with only a light trim after flowering needed to shape the plant, new shoots arise later in the year with the possibility of repeat-flowering. Preferring a moist and shady base to the planting location (like most Clematis), this variety is also tolerant of coastal conditions as well as being suitable for large container pots.

  • Garden care: No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
