Centranthus lecoqii
valerian
- Position: full sun
- Soil: well-drained, neutral to alkaline
- Rate of Growth: fast-growing
- Flowering period: July to October
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Native to rocky slopes, wasteground and roadsides in France and southern Spain, this long-flowering perennial is ideal for wilder planting schemes, especially if you are keen on attracting pollinating insects. The pale lilac-mauve flowers top upright stems from midsummer and will carry on well into autumn, especially when grown on poorer soils. The contrast between their grey-green foliage and unusually coloured flowers is a delight. - Garden care: Deadhead regularly throughout the summer to prolong flowering. In autumn cut the plant back down to the ground and compost the dead stems.
