This pond plant is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its foliage in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose it all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Depth of water: 0-22cm (0-9in)
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to August
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

With its compact, tufted demeanour, this marginal aquatic perennial is ideal for the borders of pools or the charm of a bog garden where its bright green leaves intricately striped in white and cream create a visually engaging spectacle. Insignificant flowers, resembling small horns and measuring 5-7cm (2-3”) long, make a subtle appearance in summer. Growing in short, wide clumps, this plant finds its niche in small to medium ponds, lending itself to the formation of large, low-growing clumps. Beyond its ornamental appeal, Acorus 'Variegatus' serves a practical purpose, binding soil together on pond banks or streams, contributing to both aesthetics and functionality in aquatic settings.
  • Garden care:
Reliable in wet or very moist, ‘boggy’ fertile soils, this acorus can be planted in aquatic baskets (to reduce root disturbance) in shallow water up to 22cm (9"). Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years. Wearing gloves, comb through old or damaged foliage in late winter to tidy if necessary.
