A weeping willow valued as a majestic specimen near water with a broadly spreading crown and curtain-like weeping branches that create a spectacular profile that can be reflected in ponds or streams. 'Tristis' is a large deciduous tree that boasts gracefully arching branches that cascade down, sweeping the ground with brilliant yellow twigs that shine against the stunning winter silhouette of its mature branches. Narrow silver-green leaves emerge in spring alongside golden catkins before turning a glorious shade of gold as autumn advances.
How to care for Salix alba Tristis:
When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted compost in the planting hole. Although pruning is not necessary, the most vibrant winter stem colour is found on new growth. For an optimal display, trim the stems to 4” (10cm) annually during early spring, just as the leaf buds begin to swell. An alternative is to reduce one-third of the oldest stems every year during early spring to encourage the growth of new stems without leaving a blank area in your border.
