Magnolia 'Genie' (PBR)
magnolia
This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: any moist but well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: April to May
- Hardiness: fully hardy
The magnificent flowers of this compact magnolia will add a bold shot of colour to the spring garden. Unfurling from furry buds in mid-spring, the deep raspberry petals form generously proportioned (up to 15cm across) flowers, which have a light perfume. They appear on the bare stems in generous number, so they look stunning when in full bloom, and will make a fantastic centrepiece to the spring flower display. Alternatively, as it is relatively compact, it can be kept it in a large pot if kept well fed and watered. - Garden care: Plant in a sheltered spot, away from strong winds. Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in spring. Mulch in spring with manure or leafmould, especially on dry soils.
