A wonderful addition to the winter garden, when the clusters of bright red berries offer a welcome splash of colour, back-lit by the rich green, spiny-edged leaves. This variety of our native English holly makes an excellent hedge if clipped annually in late summer and its prickly leaves make it ideal for deterring potential intruders. This female cultivar, while self-fertile, will require benefits from a male variety of holly nearby, or a planted companion such as
Ilex aquifolium ‘Golden Queen’ or 'Silver Queen' to produce reliable and numerous berries.
