Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with moist, well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells, watering deeply rather than little and often to encourage strong root growth.
Feed regularly with a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks from spring until late summer, switching to a high-potassium feed like tomato fertiliser to promote abundant blooms.
In autumn, apply a thick mulch of compost or well-rotted manure around the base to insulate the roots and retain moisture. This hardy perennial dies back completely in winter, so leave the stems intact for added protection before cutting them back to its woody base in early spring.
