Griselinia littoralis

New Zealand privet

Product Image
A dense, shapely, evergreen shrub with an upright habit and lush, apple-green leathery leaves. Griselinia littoralis is ideal for growing as a specimen plant in the border and also makes an excellent hedging plant.

Griselinia is borderline hardy in the UK, tolerating mild coastal and southern regions where winters are less severe. In colder inland areas, it may suffer from frost damage, so planting in a sheltered spot or providing winter protection is recommended.

How to care for Griselinia littoralis:

Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny position, sheltered from harsh winds. New Zealand privet tolerates salt spray, making it ideal for coastal gardens.

Water regularly during dry spells in the first year to help establish strong roots. In April or May, lightly trim any shoots that disrupt the plant’s symmetry, encouraging a dense, bushy shape. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) layer of well-rotted garden compost around the base after pruning to retain moisture and improve soil structure.

In colder regions, protect young plants from severe frost with horticultural fleece or mulch around the base. Once established, Griselinia is low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning to maintain its form.
