Attractive foliage consisting of three palmate leaflets, each with a notched edge, forms in clusters along the creeping stolons.
In partial shade alpine strawberries will spread as ground cover, in full sun, small, round decorative and edible fruits are formed.
Use Fragaria vesca at the front of the border, lining the edge of a path, or for spilling over the rim of a pot.
How to care for Fragaria vesca:
Fragaria thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun to partial shade. Plant these wild strawberries about 20-30cm (8-12in) apart in a sunny border or container, enriching the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure.
Water regularly during dry spells but avoid waterlogging their shallow roots. Mulch with straw or leaf mould to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Thin overcrowded clumps and divide them every few years to maintain vigour.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to boost growth and fruiting.
