The thistle-like flowerheds of this sea holly are larger and richer in colour than many of the other forms, while the attractively marbled foliage, which is held on stiff, blue stems, are also attractive. Adaptable and easy to grow, they add textural interest and colour to mixed or herbaceous borders, and they also look great in more naturalised planting schemes such as prairie or gravel gardens.
Garden care: Lift and divide large colonies in spring. Avoid the temptation to cut back the flower-heads in autumn as they provide interest in the winter garden. Trim back to newly emerging foliage in spring.
