Impressive clump-forming perennials that hail mainly from dry grassland, semi-arid and mountainous regions throughout central and western Asia. In early summer their thick, fleshy roots produce a loosely tufted rosette of strap-shaped leaves from which a magnificent, upright flowerspike emerges that can reach up to 3m tall. This is densely packed with hundreds of buds, which open slowly from the base to star-shaped flowers with showy stamens. Once it has finished flowering the whole plant will die back and remain dormant until the following spring. Plant in a sunny spot with shelter from strong winds in fertile, well-drained soil, creating a wide shallow hole, sitting the rootstock on a 5cm (2”) mound of coarse sand. Young growth can be susceptible to frost damage.
How to care for Eremurus collection:
In September every three to five years carefully lift and divide congested clumps. Replant the strongest crown on a layer of sharp grit, spreading out the roots and covering them with a thin (5cm/2in) layer of soil. In frost-prone areas cover with a dry mulch of fern leaves.
What's included:
In each collection you will receive 1 tuberous rootstock of each of the following:
- Eremurus stenophyllus: Bright yellow flowers with protruding, orange-tipped stamens turn a rusty brown as they mature from early to midsummer, giving the flowerspike a beautiful two-tone effect. A spectacular addition to prairie style planting schemes. Grows to 1.5m.
- Eremurus 'Line Dance' (PBR): Tall, slender flower spikes emerge from clumps of narrow, mid-green leaves, creating a striking vertical accent in early summer. The densely packed, star-shaped white flowers of Eremurus 'Line Dance' open from soft peach buds, forming elegant tapering plumes. Grows to 1.2m.
- Eremurus × isabellinus 'Cleopatra':Stately, slender spikes packed with burnt orange flowers soar above strap-shaped, bluish-green leaves in early and mid summer. This spectacular foxtail lily makes a bold statement towards the back of a sunny, well-drained border. It's best partnered with late-flowering perennials and tall grasses which help to mask the plant's short-lived foliage. Grows to 1.5m.
