A semi-evergreen fern with bright green, leathery fronds and distinctive black stems. It is sometimes called the holly fern due to the shape of the fronds. This fern has an upright habit and looks particularly attractive among other ferns or woodland plants in a shady border, but it does need humus-rich soil to thrive in.
How to care for Cyrtomium fortunei:
Plant into soil that has been improved with organic matter and water regularly during the growing season. Do not allow the soil or compost to dry out until the plant has become established. Tatty or damaged fronds can be removed in early spring as or just before the new growth emerges. Can be grown outdoors but will require protection from frosts, cover the crown with straw in the winter.
