Arbutus unedo is a spreading, shrubby tree with shredding brown bark and glossy bright green leaves. It is attractive in autumn when the white flowers, often tinged pink, are produced and the fruit from last year are turning red.
The tree gets its name from these fruit, which look like strawberries but sadly don't taste like them. An excellent tree for coastal gardens or in a sheltered spot inland.

How to care for Arbutus unedo:
Plant in well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH in a sunny or or partially shaded, sheltered position. Alternatively, a large, well-draining pot with loam based compost (such as John Innes) mixed with ericaceous compost will be fine.
Strawberry tree tolerates coastal conditions but needs watering consistently during the first year to help establish strong roots, after which it becomes drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering, or sites prone to waterlogging.
Mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the base to prevent rot. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser.
Minimal pruning is required; remove dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring to maintain shape. Protect young plants from severe frost and wind, particularly in colder regions.
