Acorus calamus

sweet flag

Product Image
Thriving in its preference for wet feet, this deciduous aquatic perennial unveils strap-shaped, aromatic leaves in a vibrant shade of mid-green. Come midsummer, inconspicuous yet intriguing brown horn-like flowers emerge, reaching up to 7cm (3") just below the tips of the leaf-like flower stems. Resembling an iris in its elegance, Acorus calamus adds a touch of sophistication to pond margins, whether nestled in the formal ambiance of an urban setting or gracing the wild fringes of a natural pond.

How to care for Acorus calamus:

Reliable in wet or very moist, ‘boggy’ fertile soils, this acorus can be planted in aquatic baskets (to reduce root disturbance) in shallow water up to 22cm (9"). Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years. Wearing gloves, comb through old or damaged foliage in late winter to tidy if necessary.
