With its fiery autumn colour and compact size, 'Sun Valley' is a popular medium-sized, deciduous tree whose crown develops into an oval to rounded shape. The young foliage emerges reddish-green before maturing to bright green in summer, and clusters of tiny red flowers adorn the bare branches in early spring. The classic 3-5 lobed, maple-shaped leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red in October, the colour being more vibrant and lasting longer than other varieties when grown in neutral to acid soils. An excellent landscape tree option.
How to care for Acer rubrum Sun Valley:
Incorporate plenty of well-rotted leafmould or compost into the backfill when planting. Ensure the tree is monitored for water during its first growing season in order to establish. Add a top-dressing of a multi-purpose fertiliser around the base of the plant in late spring. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
