This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average to fast
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

The combination of bright blue flowers (in spring) and heart-shaped, variegated foliage, make this a very decorative perennial for ground cover in partially shaded borders. Use it for underplanting deciduous trees and shrubs, or mix it with hellebores and herbaceous geraniums for a year-round display.

  • Garden care: Remove the faded flower-heads after flowering. Lift and divide the plant every two or three years in late autumn. Cut back foliage after it has died back in autumn, and at the same time apply a generous layer of mulch around the root ball.
