This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  The sculptural foliage of this handsome perennial emerges each spring a bright reddish bronze colour before turning green, so it really adds a seasonal splash of colour. In summer, tall sprays of pink flowers are jettisoned upwards, and this creates yet another season of colour. Rodgersias however are popular just for their foliage shape and texture, which offers a wonderful contrast in borders or more naturalised planting schemes in reliably moist soils.
  
  
• Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould when planting. Protect the young foliage against slug damage using beer traps or environmentally friendly slug pellets. Lift and divide congested colonies in early spring.
