This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: preferably acid, fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Named in honour of the Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, this exciting shrub has a very distinctive foliage colour. As they emerge in spring, the leaves are a rich salmon-orange, so these create quite a beautiful early show before they mature to green. In early summer, clusters of creamy flowers are held at the end of the branches and these are followed by burgundy fruit capsules. Very decorative, it makes an excellent addition to the mixed border.

  • Garden care: Once established, cut back up to one in four of the oldest stems to their base, after flowering. Then, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant.
