  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Often producing their colourful trusses for weeks on end, perennial phlox have long been considered a staple ingredient of the summer border. The cultivars in this collection all have highly scented blooms, so try to position them close to a path, entrance or seating area, and as they last well after being cut, plant some extras for the vase. Mainly originating from North America where they are found colonising habitats that are reliably moist, they prefer a rich soil in full sun or lightly dappled shade. Support the taller cultivars with brushwood or canes, and divide over-large clumps every 3 - 4 years.

In each collection you will receive one plant of each of the following cultivars. Supplied in 9cm pots.

Phlox paniculata 'Larissa' (PBR) Well suited to herbaceous borders or cottage gardens where they associate well with roses and other summer-flowering perennials. Their soft colouring mixes easily with many shades including lilac, purple, deep plum and rich pink. Grows to 75cm tall.

Phlox paniculata 'Younique Mauve' (PBR) Stout, upright stems are clothed with deep green foliage, and topped from early summer with dense clusters of highly scented soft mauve flowers that are blushed white. A compact cultivar, it is ideal for the front of the border or a patio pot. Grows to 50cm.

Phlox paniculata 'Alexandra' (PBR) A disease-resistant and vibrantly coloured cultivar that produces large domed clusters of white-eyed, hot pink flowers, which open from pointed buds throughout the summer. Plant in bold drifts for maximum impact. Grows to 75cm tall.

  • Garden care: Support with bamboo canes, brushwood or ring stakes before the flowers appear. Phlox are greedy plants, so apply a mulch 5-7cm (2-3 in) deep of well-rotted garden compost or manure in early spring. Shear off the spent flowers to prevent reseeding. If the leaves show signs of powdery mildew, cut down to the ground and dispose of the affected foliage, but do not compost it. Clear away the debris around the plant to reduce the chances of reinfection. Cut down to the ground in autumn. Lift and divide large clumps in autumn or spring.
