Hibiscus syriacus White Pillar ('Gandini van Aart') (PBR)
- Position: full sun
- Soil: humus-rich, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil
- Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
- Flowering period: August to October
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Thi is the second in the new 'pillar' series of hibiscus (the first being the purple flowering one). They are great plants for smaller hardens, or if you only have narrow borders but still want to add some height as they have a sky rocket-like shape, which for several months from mid- to late summer is laden with pure white semi-double flowers. The late arrival of the blooms also makes it ideal for extending the season of interest in the mixed or shrub border.
- Garden care: To encourage a bushy habit prune young plants hard in late spring. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. Once established it requires little if any regular pruning.
