Noted for their ability to flower in their first year, the Digitalis in the ‘Dalmatian Series’ are ideal for herbaceous borders and naturalised planting schemes, where they will put on an impressive display for several months from early summer. Short-lived perennials, they can be encouraged to produce a second flush of flowers if deadheaded promptly and will often self-seed. Flourishing in partial shade, they will also grow in full sun, provided they are not allowed to get too dry. After the flowers have faded, cut them down to ground level and apply a generous layer of mulch.

In this collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties, each supplied as a plug plant.

  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Purple' (Dalmatian Series):Rich lavender-purple flowers form tall spires that bring vertical interest and structure in the border. Mix with rich plums, purples and lilac for a great effect. Height to 60cm

  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian White' (Dalmatian Series):The throats of the white trumpet-shaped flowers are speckled with maroon, creating a very pretty two-tone effect. Useful for illuminating partially shaded areas. Grows to 60cm.

  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Peach' (Dalmatian Series):From amongst the neat mounds of foliage, flower spikes emerge, encircled by a mass of green buds, which open from the base to soft peach coloured trumpets. Grows to 60cm.

  • Digitalis purpurea Dalmatian Crème (Dalmatian Series):Well-branched flower spikes rise from tidy foliage, bearing creamy yellow thimble-like flowers, each with a throat that is attractively splotched with maroon. Grows to 60cm.

  • Digitalis purpurea 'Dalmatian Rose' (Dalmatian Series):Red-spotted lavender-rose flowers act as a magnet to bees and other beneficial insects. They make an elegant addition to the edge of a woodland or wildlife garden. Grows to 60cm.

  • Garden care:Ensure that the soil is kept moist in summer. After flowering, cut back the flowered spikes to encourage more sideshoots. Cut down to the ground after flowering. Apply a generous 5-7 cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the plant in early spring. These plants are short-lived perennials, although if happy they will produce plenty of new sideshoots and self-seed freely.

  • CAUTION toxic if eaten
