Delphiniums are the stars of the early summer border and these eye-catching Guardian Series cultivars produce impressive spires of large, well-formed flowers in a range of beautiful colours. This series of F1 hybrids is however considered a breeding breakthrough, as they flower up to 6 weeks before the open-pollinated cultivars, producing an abundance of flowers on strong stems. They look effective when planted in clumps or drifts through a cottage or herbaceous border and will flourish in a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil.
In each collection you will receive 1 plug plant of each of the following:
Delphinium 'Guardian Blue' (Guardian Series)
Spikes of double, bright blue flowers on strong stems emerge from the mounding clumps of deep green, deeply lobed foliage. They are now widely grown by cut-flower specialists, because of their ability to bloom so quickly after transplanting. It is however equally useful in the border, providing magnificent columns of colour for several weeks from early summer. Grows to 1m.
Delphinium 'Guardian White' (Guardian Series)
Standing proud amongst a densely planted herbaceous border, the double white flowers that are tinged green are borne on glowing white flowerspikes add vertical interest with their distinctly upright habit. Grows to 1m.
Delphinium 'Guardian Lavender' (Guardian Series)
Lavender-blue flowers open upwards from the base of the upright flowerspike from early summer creating a beautiful display over several weeks. Plant these with perennials that have a softer silhouette, preferably ones that have stronger purple, pink, plum or white coloured flowers. As the flowers look super in cut arrangements, you should plant more hten you need to make sure you have plenty for the vase. Grows to 1m.
- Garden care: Protect young foliage against slug and snail damage in spring. Stake with bamboo canes in mid-spring, before the flowers appear. During the growing season, apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks and wearing gloves cut back the faded flower-stems to a flowering side-shoot to encourage repeat flowering. At the end of autumn cut back and compost the faded flower-stems.
