These elegant summer-blooming perennials are becoming increasingly popular with garden designers. They are sought-after for their distinctive thistle-like flower-heads, which help add colour and textural interest to herbaceous borders, meadows and prairie-style planting schemes. Plant them in a sunny spot with fertile, moist but freely draining soil and dead-head regularly to help prolong the flowering season.

In each collection you will receive one of each of the following varieties supplied in 9cm pots.

      • Cirsium rivulare Frosted Magic ('Lowcir') (PBR):Only recently introduced, this striking plume thistle looks particularly effective in a prairie-style setting, where its stiff, upright habit offers an attractive contrast to the soft silhouette of the ornamental grasses. Height to 120cm.

      • Cirsium rivulare Trevors Felley Find (PBR): Stunning ornamental thistle for a sunny garden but not with blue flowers as the name implies, but a deep rich purple. These gorgeous flowerheads either grow singly, or in clusters of 2 or 3 on tall straight stems above long dark green, prickly edged leaves. Loved by butterflies and bees alike these flowerheads fade to a form a lovely seed head in the autumn garden. Height to 150cm.

      • Cirsium rivulare Atropurpureum: Spectacular, deep crimson thistles appear on erect stems in July and August above spiny, dark green leaves. This handsome, towering thistle is a valuable addition to a summer garden and looks equally at home in a wildflower meadow, beside water or in groups among other perennials. Although it will tolerate dry conditions and partial shade, it does best in a moist, sunny border. Height to 120cm.

      • Garden care: Divide congested plants from autumn to spring and cut back to the ground in autumn to prevent self-seeding.
