This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This is an elegant perennial that forms an evergreen basal rosette of slender foliage, from which upright stems emerge in midsummer bearing gorgeous, bell-shaped flowers that vary in colour from near white to violet-blue. A very pretty addition for naturalised planting schemes, meadows or edge of woodland positions, where it may self-seed to form a colony in good conditions.

  • Garden care: Protect the foliage from slugs and deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted compost around the base of the plant in spring.
