This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, preferably sandy soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A strong growing compact form with upright smokey grey stems, which are smothered in purplish buds in mid- to late spring. These open to reveal lemon yellow flowers which rise in columns above the cool blue-green foliage. Happiest in a sunny spot, they will become drought tolerant once established.

  • Garden care: Lift and divide large colonies in early spring if necessary though they are best left undisturbed if you can since they develop deep tap roots which enable them to be more drought tolerant. Resist the temptation to cut the plant back in autumn as the seed-pods and slender stems look wonderful frosted in the winter garden.
