This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A fabulous plant for adding late summer colour to the garden, this Japanese anemone grows in sun or shade and has masses of yellow-eyed, pale pink flowers. The leaves are semi-evergreen and deeply cut and bring interesting texture to a herbaceous border. It is clump-forming and looks good with most late-flowering plants, especially if it is allowed to spread gently among perennials and shrubs.

  • Garden care: Cut back the stalks after the flowers have faded, and and tidy up old dead leaves in March, then mulch well. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn.
