This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: well-drained, fertile soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

Compact and bushy, this new agastache does really well in a pot (provided it is kept well fed and watered), where its large purple flowers, which appear over several months from midsummer, will attract lots of bees and butterflies. Invaluable plants for maintaining lots of colour in the border well into the autumn, they are cottage garden classics, but will also associate well with ornamental grasses, so work well in more naturalised settings too.

  • Garden care: Don't cut back the faded flower-stems until early spring, as they provide interest in the winter months. Lift and divide congested colonies in spring.
